Geotechnical Project Engineer/Manager

About the role

The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. is seeking a Geotechnical Project Engineer/Manager to lead and support geotechnical projects in Canton, MI, delivering cost estimates, field investigations, designs, and construction oversight.

Key responsibilities

• Prepares detailed cost estimates and proposals for geotechnical engineering tasks and projects.
• Plans, coordinates, and executes geotechnical field investigations to assess subsurface conditions, soil properties, and risks.
• Acts as phase/task or project manager for multi‑discipline projects.
• Performs geotechnical analyses and calculations (ASD and LRFD) for foundation design, slope stability, and earthwork specifications.
• Designs foundations, retaining structures, embankments, and other geotechnical structures.
• Prepares and reviews technical reports, drawings, and specifications for construction projects.
• Collaborates with other engineering disciplines, architects, and construction teams to integrate geotechnical considerations.
• Monitors and inspects construction activities to ensure compliance with design requirements.
• Manages and coordinates staff engineers and technicians on project assignments.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (advanced degree preferred).
• 10‑15 years of experience in geotechnical engineering.
• Passed the Principles of Engineering (PE) exam or ability to obtain within one year; ability to obtain multi‑state licensure.
• Experience with MDOT, ODOT, or other transportation/local agencies (preferred).
• Experience with construction materials testing/inspection and laboratory testing.
• Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Ability to travel to project sites as required.

Required skills

• Geotechnical design software (e.g., GeoStudio, PLAXIS, or similar).
• Cost estimating and proposal preparation.
• Construction materials testing and laboratory testing procedures.
• Experience with transportation agency standards (MDOT, ODOT).
