General Counsel I – Litigation Support

About the role

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is seeking a General Counsel I to provide legal guidance and litigation support for agency matters. The role involves research, drafting, and advising agency leadership on a variety of legal issues.

Key responsibilities

• Research and interpret laws, rules, and regulations affecting the agency.
• Draft legal opinions, briefs, contracts, and other legal documents.
• Advise agency leadership and staff on legal matters.
• Support civil litigation by coordinating with the Office of the Attorney General and assisting with case preparation.
• Review and develop legislation, analyze legislative impact, and collaborate with legislative staff and external partners.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA‑accredited law school.
• At least two years of full‑time, wage‑earning experience as a licensed attorney.
• Strong organization, time‑management, and ability to travel.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Preferred: experience as legal counsel in a governmental agency, or in administrative, contract, criminal, or labor/employment law; litigation experience in state or federal court; supervision experience.
