Field Director / Laboratory Director

About the role

The Lab Director/Field Director will manage North Wind's cultural resource laboratory in Tempe and serve as Field Director on archaeological surveys and data recovery projects across Arizona.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain the cultural resource laboratory, ensuring safe storage and organization of project materials.
• Direct lab staff in completing analyses, artifact identification, and documentation.
• Lead transportation, organization, and storage of artifacts collected in the field.
• Oversee preparation and submission of state, tribal, and federal permits, including renewals and reports.
• Conduct and supervise Class III surveys, manage field mobilization/demobilization, and ensure accurate data collection.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of experience with Class III archaeological surveys, monitoring, testing and data recovery in the Southwest.
• Proven ability to work with agency site‑recording standards and curation facilities.
• Strong technical writing experience for Class I and Class III reports.
• Willingness to work irregular hours and travel to field sites.

Required skills

• Artifact analysis (ceramics, lithics, groundstone, shell).
• GIS and mapping tools: Esri ArcMap/ArcPro, Esri Field Maps, Survey123, Google Earth Pro, Avenza Maps.
• Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Office 365) and Adobe Acrobat.
• GPS data collection using Garmin or iOS Field Collector.
