Fiber Optic Specialist – Third Shift

About the role

Join Commonwealth Fusion Systems as a Fiber Optic Specialist on the third shift, supporting both R&D and production of the SPARC fusion machine. You will handle, splice, test, and integrate thousands of optical fibers while ensuring minimal loss and maximum reliability.

Key responsibilities

• Handle, route, splice, test, and repair optical fibers throughout the SPARC fusion machine.
• Perform mechanical integration of small assemblies, such as passthrough flanges and enclosures, alongside fiber work.
• Install composite or polymer wrappings for fibers and their enclosures.
• Train other technicians on proper installation, splicing, routing, and measurement procedures.
• Improve safety protocols for laser and fiber‑optic handling.
• Maintain functional operation and preventive maintenance of optical test equipment.
• Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and other departments to meet manufacturing and R&D fiber needs.

Required profile

• 4+ years of experience in fiber‑optic field applications.
• Hands‑on experience measuring attenuation, insertion loss, and performing spectral analysis with equipment such as OTDR, OSA, OBR, and power meters.
• Proven ability to handle fibers in a laboratory setting following industry standards.
• Experience with polyimide‑coated or other specialty fibers is a plus.
• Ability to train and mentor junior technicians.
