Experienced CNC Machinist

About the role

Collins Machine Works is seeking an experienced CNC Machinist to set up and operate manually controlled and CNC machines in precision fabrication, maintenance, and repair. Positions are available for both day and night shifts at the Fifth Street and Syer Road facilities in Portsmouth, Virginia. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with access to DoD facilities; visa sponsorship is not offered.

Key responsibilities

• Operate a variety of precision tools and equipment, including lathes, manual milling machines, drill presses, hydraulic presses, band saws, and cutting tools.
• Fabricate and shape metal parts and tools, select and secure fixtures, and use inserts and tooling appropriately.
• Interpret engineering drawings and blueprints, set up jobs on vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers, and maintain tolerances of 0.001".
• Perform daily cleaning, light maintenance, and use lifting aids as needed.
• Track parts and jobs using JobBOSS and Travelers software while adhering to safety procedures.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED with 3–5 years of related machining experience.
• U.S. citizenship and ability to work at both Portsmouth locations.
• Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and CNC program codes (G, D, T).
• Strong mathematical skills for measurements, fractions, percentages, and tolerances.

Required skills

• Lathe, manual milling, drill press, hydraulic press, and band saw operation.
• Fanuc, Mazatrol, Okuma, and DMG/Mori CNC control experience.
• G‑code programming and ability to maintain 0.001" tolerances.
• JobBOSS and Travelers software proficiency.
• Forklift and crane operation.
• Blueprint reading and precision measuring with gauges.
