Environmental Designer – Energy Analysis Specialist

About the role

Atelier Ten in San Francisco is seeking a full‑time Environmental Designer with a specialty in Energy Analysis. You will work on diverse projects—from offices and labs to large masterplans—to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Key responsibilities

• Develop shoe‑box and whole‑building energy models using IES‑VE, eQuest, EnergyPlus or Grasshopper.
• Evaluate envelope performance, massing, and HVAC system options across climate zones.
• Identify net‑zero energy and carbon strategies and support senior staff with sustainability assessments, thermal comfort analysis, and life‑cycle cost studies.
• Collaborate with architects, MEP engineers, and internal design teams to integrate energy recommendations into the design process.
• Prepare technical reports, client presentations, and maintain in‑house databases and tools.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or higher in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Building Science or related field.
• 1‑4 years of professional experience in whole‑building energy analysis, building physics, or high‑performance HVAC design for commercial projects.
• Strong analytical mindset, proactive attitude, and ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly.

Required skills

• Energy modeling software: IES‑VE, eQuest (preferred); EnergyPlus, Grasshopper (plus).
• Knowledge of ASHRAE 90.1, 55, 62.1, 189 standards and Appendix G modeling protocols.
• Experience with HVAC and plumbing system design for commercial buildings.
• Familiarity with LEED, WELL, or other green building rating systems.
• Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
