District Environmental Health Director

About the role

The Georgia Department of Public Health is seeking a District Environmental Health Director to lead a comprehensive environmental health program for the Gainesville district. This senior position oversees regulatory compliance, public health services, and community outreach across a wide range of environmental health domains.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the district‑wide environmental health regulatory and service program.
• Supervise a multidisciplinary environmental health workforce handling compliance, evaluation, and monitoring.
• Develop and implement policies for food service facilities, land use, sewage management, portable sanitation, non‑public water, tourist accommodations, swimming pools, spas, and recreational water parks.
• Oversee home environmental surveys (healthy homes, lead, radon), rabies control, vector surveillance, and environmental health complaints.
• Coordinate district programs with state and federal agencies, establishing goals and objectives.
• Provide technical expertise to staff, Boards of Health, and external stakeholders.
• Deliver technical training to environmental health specialists and the public.
• Collaborate with the State Environmental Section on district‑wide initiatives.
• Lead human‑resource functions, employee relations, and foster a high‑performance team environment.
• Develop short‑ and long‑term strategic plans for the district’s environmental health program.
• Prepare and manage the district budget and coordinate funding sources.
• Assist in drafting proposed laws, regulations, and rules related to environmental health.

Required profile

• Highly qualified professional with extensive experience in environmental health program management.
• Proven supervisory experience overseeing a diverse environmental health workforce.
• Strong knowledge of public health regulations, policy development, and compliance monitoring.
• Ability to collaborate with state, federal, local, and private sector partners.
• Experience in budget preparation, financial management, and securing funding.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills to provide technical guidance and training.
