Director of Nuclear Engineering

About the role

Radiant, a startup developing portable nuclear microreactors, is looking for a Director of Nuclear Engineering to shape the design and analysis strategy for its fleet of 1‑MW reactors. The role will be based in El Segundo, CA and requires full onsite presence.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and grow a multidisciplinary team of nuclear engineers covering core physics, shielding performance, dose and consequence analysis, and nuclear instrumentation.
• Manage team execution to meet strategic goals, remove obstacles, and adapt to shifting priorities.
• Identify, assess, and communicate technical, schedule, and regulatory risks.
• Develop and standardize analysis roadmaps that enable rapid iteration across multiple reactor programs.
• Define design margin approaches and conduct methodical peer reviews.
• Collaborate with universities, national labs, and external partners to achieve key objectives.

Required profile

• Degree in nuclear engineering, physics, or engineering physics from an accredited institution.
• Minimum 10 years of experience managing reactor design and analysis teams.
• Strong grasp of engineering first principles across nuclear, thermal, electrical, and mechanical domains.
• Experience with DOE authorization and/or NRC regulatory processes and safety basis development.
• Willingness to relocate to El Segundo and work extended hours as needed.
