Director Communications

About the role

ESPN is seeking an experienced and innovative Director of Communications to lead communications for its entertainment-driven programming and high‑profile events. Based in New York, the role will shape publicity strategies for ESPN Films, 30 for 30 series, podcasts, and the annual ESPYS.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee communications for ESPN Films, 30 for 30 documentaries, podcasts, and original content series.
• Lead publicity and red‑carpet planning for the ESPYS.
• Serve as the communications lead for ESPN’s tennis coverage, including the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, and Australian Open.
• Develop and execute multi‑platform publicity campaigns and create compelling story angles for media pitching.
• Plan and manage red‑carpet events with talent, athletes, and celebrities.
• Collaborate with senior executives on media interviews, PR planning, and issue management.
• Write and edit press releases, PR documents, and external messaging for major announcements.
• Utilize new tools, including AI, to produce multimedia assets for internal and external audiences.
• Manage external PR agencies and serve as a spokesperson for national and local media.
• Travel to represent ESPN at events, premieres, and conferences.

Required profile

• 7‑10 years of public relations or media relations experience.
• Proven experience overseeing red‑carpet and celebrity‑focused events.
• Background in film and television public relations.
• Strong network of national and local media contacts across TV, print, online, radio, and trade outlets.
• Deep understanding of sports, entertainment, and media landscapes.
• Strategic, creative thinker with excellent writing skills.
