Custodian (Level 1 or 2) – Residential Life

About the role

The University’s Residential Life department is seeking Custodian 1 or Custodian 2 to maintain cleanliness and safety across its residence halls and apartments. The role involves daily cleaning, waste handling, and support for campus events in a high‑traffic student environment.

Key responsibilities

• Clean lobbies, bathrooms, hallways and assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting and polishing.
• Empty trash and recycling containers, transport waste, and handle bio‑hazardous material when required.
• Strip, wax, and polish floors using industrial mops and commercial floor machines.
• Operate wet/dry vacuums, carpet extraction equipment, flood pumps and power washers for water removal and exterior cleaning.
• Unlock and lock campus buildings, manage master keys and ensure building security.
• Set up tables, chairs, partitions and signage for special events and rearrange furniture as needed.
• Perform routine equipment maintenance, report safety hazards and document building maintenance needs.

Required profile

• Custodian 1: No prior experience required.
• Custodian 2: Minimum six months experience in custodial, housekeeping, grounds‑keeping or food‑service work.
• Physical ability to walk multiple times through a 10,000 sq ft building, climb five‑story stairs, stand for extended periods and lift 20‑40 lb items.
• Ability to work around or handle hazardous materials and pass a pre‑employment physical examination.

Required skills

• Operation of commercial cleaning equipment such as floor machines, wet/dry vacuums and power washers.
• Mixing and applying cleaning solutions at correct concentrations.
