Custodian (Level 1 or 2) – Residential Life

About the role

The Custodian 1 or 2 will join a crew responsible for maintaining over 1.9 million square feet of residence halls and apartments for more than 5,000 students. The role involves frequent interaction with students, staff, and the public while ensuring clean, safe, and well‑maintained living environments.

Key responsibilities

• Clean residence hall lobbies, bathrooms, hallways and assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting and polishing.
• Empty trash and recycling containers, transport waste, and handle bio‑hazardous material when required.
• Strip, wax, and polish floors using industrial‑size mops and commercial floor machines.
• Operate wet/dry vacuums, carpet extraction equipment and flood pumps to remove water or clean carpets.
• Wash building exteriors, windows, walls, steps and sidewalks with power washers, pressure sprayers and commercial window‑washing tools.
• Unlock and lock campus buildings using assigned keys and maintain key security.
• Set up tables, chairs, partitions and signage for special events and rearrange office furniture as needed.

Required profile

• Comfortable with high public contact and interaction with students and staff.
• Ability to work safely with hazardous materials and follow written standards for recycling and waste disposal.
• Responsible for the security of issued keys and adherence to campus safety protocols.

Required skills

• Operation of wet/dry vacuum and carpet extraction equipment.
• Use of industrial floor polishing machines, floor strippers, waxes and sealers.
• Power washing and pressure‑spraying of building exteriors and windows.
• Key management and basic security procedures.
