Counsel, Litigation (Global IP & Regulatory)

About the role

OpenAI is expanding its Litigation and Regulatory team and seeks an experienced counsel to lead global intellectual‑property litigation, dispute resolution and related regulatory matters. The role reports to the Associate General Counsel and works closely with Legal, Communications, Global Affairs and Executive teams. Based in San Francisco, CA or New York, NY, the position follows a hybrid schedule with three days on‑site each week.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on commercial disputes, copyright and trademark litigation, and regulatory investigations worldwide.
• Manage and oversee outside counsel throughout discovery, motion practice, trial preparation and settlement negotiations.
• Monitor changes in relevant laws, regulations and industry trends, delivering timely updates to leadership.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional partners to gather information, assess risk and devise effective legal strategies.

Required profile

• At least 8 years of combined litigation and/or regulatory experience in technology companies or law firms.
• Juris Doctor degree and an active license to practice law in California or another U.S. state.
• Proven track record managing complex global IP litigation, including copyright and trademark disputes across multiple jurisdictions.
• Strong ownership mindset, curiosity about technology and ability to exercise sound judgment in ambiguous situations.
