Chief Scientist – Magnets

About the role

SandboxAQ is seeking a Chief Scientist to lead the Magnets vertical within its Chemical Simulation group. The role combines deep domain expertise in magnetic materials with AI‑driven simulation to create high‑performance, rare‑earth‑lean permanent magnets for critical U.S. industries.

Key responsibilities

• Own the scientific charter and technical roadmap for the Magnets vertical, covering phase stability, magnetocrystalline anisotropy, finite‑temperature coercivity and microstructure engineering of Fe‑ and Co‑based intermetallic systems.
• Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of research scientists, computational/ML scientists and post‑docs, setting scientific standards and preparing the group for NewCo readiness.
• Define and prioritize magnetism‑aware large‑quantitative‑model (LQM) capabilities, data‑generation pipelines and multi‑scale modeling on the AI‑Sim platform.
• Drive IP generation from generative design outputs, ensuring a robust portfolio of proprietary magnet formulations.

Required profile

• PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or related field with deep specialization in magnetism or hard magnetic materials.
• 10+ years post‑PhD experience leading magnetic‑materials programs, including industrial or national‑lab leadership at principal scientist or director level.
• Proven track record of translating first‑principles, multi‑scale and ML‑driven modeling into manufacturable magnet formulations.
• Extensive publication and patent record and experience presenting to senior government, defense and industry audiences.

Required skills

• Hands‑on experience with Fe‑N, Mn‑based, Sm‑Co or other rare‑earth‑lean permanent‑magnet systems.
• Familiarity with powder metallurgy, sintering and heat‑treatment processes for bulk magnet production.
• Experience with AI‑driven materials discovery platforms, generative design and large‑quantitative‑model (LQM) development.
• Knowledge of CHIPS Act, DOD or DOE‑funded R&D programs and related export‑control/IP considerations.
