Chemist – Oil & Petroleum Laboratory (Bellingham, WA)

About the role

The Chemist performs laboratory tests to determine the chemical and physical characteristics of petroleum products, supports quality control and product development, and ensures compliance with regulatory and customer specifications.

Key responsibilities

• Enter sample information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and operate equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, viscometers, spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs and colorimeters.
• Test petroleum products for purity, composition, viscosity, density, acidity, flash point and other properties; record results, prepare reports and Certificates of Analysis.
• Prepare chemical solutions, calibrate instruments, clean and sterilize equipment, and assist with ISO certification and corrective actions.
• Support quality assurance activities, manage sample retention, and handle dangerous‑goods shipments after IATA certification.
• Work a rotating schedule including weekends, holidays and on‑call duties, and follow all health, safety and environmental policies.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a related science field with 1‑3 years of relevant experience.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a TWIC card.

Required skills

• Proficiency with LIMS data entry.
• Operation of laboratory instruments: microscopes, centrifuges, agitators, viscometers, balance scales, spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, colorimeters.
• Chemical solution preparation and instrument calibration.
• Knowledge of ISO standards and corrective/preventive action processes.
• Handling of hazardous materials and IATA dangerous‑goods shipping procedures.
