Carpenter Master – Advanced Journeyman

About the role

The Carpenter Master is an advanced journeyman position responsible for a wide range of carpentry, flooring, glass, door/window, and lock work across LSU facilities. The role includes lead‑worker duties, supervising assigned carpenters, maintenance workers, and contractors while ensuring safety and quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate and resolve carpentry emergencies, repairing windows, doors, stairs, specialty doors, roll‑up walls, tool boxes, podiums, and concrete forms.
• Perform routine carpentry repairs, remodeling, maintenance, and construction, producing molding and fine wood or artificial items using saws, planers, drill presses, jointers, shapers, mortisers, and other equipment.
• Install and repair wall coverings, drop ceilings, baseboards, floor tiles, and support grids.
• Maintain and service door closures, panic devices, locks, and mullions.
• Provide supervisory assistance, train apprentices and helpers, and act as interim supervisor when needed.
• Document daily work, initiate requisition orders, and ensure material availability.
• Operate heavy equipment such as man‑lifts, scissor‑lifts, forklifts, and large trucks with trailers.

Required profile

• Minimum three years of on‑the‑job experience or training in the carpentry trade.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass motor vehicle record check and drug screening.
• Safety‑sensitive and emergency‑essential status with ability to respond to hazardous situations.
• Physical capability to perform demanding manual tasks and operate heavy equipment.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Required skills

• Proficiency with rip saws, cut‑off saws, planers, drill presses, jointers, jig saws, grinders, shapers, mortising, tenoning, and bore machines.
• Experience installing flooring, glass, doors, windows, and lock hardware.
• Competence in fitting and fastening wall coverings such as plywood, paneling, sheetrock, and FRP panels.
• Operation of man‑lifts, scissor‑lifts, forklifts, and large trucks with trailers.
• Ability to produce and finish molding, cabinets, and other fine wood or artificial items.
