Carpenter Master – Advanced Journeyman

About the role

The Carpenter Master is an advanced journeyman position responsible for a wide range of carpentry, flooring, glass, door/window, and lock work within the Facility Services Carpenter Shop. The role includes leading a team of carpenters and maintenance workers, handling emergency repairs, and operating heavy equipment safely.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate and respond to carpentry emergencies, repairing windows, doors, stairs, specialty doors, roll‑up walls, tool boxes, podiums, and concrete forms.
• Perform routine carpentry repairs, remodeling, maintenance, and construction on academic and auxiliary facilities.
• Operate and maintain carpentry equipment such as rip saws, cut‑off saws, planers, drill presses, jointers, jigsaws, grinders, shapers, mortisers, tenoners, and bore machines.
• Install and repair wall coverings, drop ceilings, baseboards, floor tiles, door closures, panic devices, locks, and mullions.
• Provide supervisory assistance, train apprentices and helpers, and assume supervisor duties when required.
• Document work completed, initiate requisition orders, and ensure materials are available for assignments.

Required profile

• Advanced journeyman carpenter with ability to work independently and lead a crew.
• Experience handling emergency situations and making quick, safe repairs.
• Capability to operate heavy equipment safely.
• Strong supervisory and training skills for apprentices and helpers.

Required skills

• Carpentry, flooring, glass work, door/window installation, lock work.
• Operation of heavy equipment.
• Use of rip saws, cut‑off saws, planers, drill presses, jointers, jigsaws, grinders, shapers, mortising, tenoning, and bore machines.
• Sanding and finishing of wood and artificial materials.
• Installation of wall coverings, drop ceilings, baseboards, floor tiles, door closures, panic devices, and locks.
