Job description
About the role
Amentum is seeking a CAD/Product Definition Mechanical Designer to support the development, modification and configuration control of mechanical hardware used in U.S. Navy research, development, test and evaluation facilities. The designer translates engineering intent into accurate, manufacturable 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of material and controlled design documentation, working with design engineers, systems engineers, drafters, technicians, vendors and field personnel from concept through fabrication, installation, checkout, test, sustainment and configuration-controlled release. The role also supports the program's move toward a PLM-enabled Digital Twin / Digital Thread.
Key responsibilities
- Build fully parametric 3D solid models, assemblies and components in Autodesk Inventor from sketches, redlines, field measurements, legacy drawings and vendor data, and revise them for design optimization and configuration updates.
- Create 2D engineering drawings from 3D models using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, with views, dimensions, tolerances, parts lists and bills of material, reviewed for completeness and consistency.
- Apply GD&T principles consistent with ASME Y14.5 and ASME drawing practices.
- Support the transition to a PLM-enabled Digital Twin / Digital Thread by keeping CAD models, drawings, BOMs, revision histories and engineering change records complete, accurate and traceable in Autodesk Vault or another PDM/PLM system.
- Maintain CAD files, drawings, models and BOMs, support engineering change orders, drawing releases and revision control, and take part in design and configuration-control reviews.
- Support prototype, fabrication, assembly, installation and production readiness, and travel periodically to customer, vendor, fabrication or test sites.
Required profile
- Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Drafting Technology, Industrial Design, Manufacturing Technology or a related technical discipline; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
- 3-5 years of hands-on mechanical CAD experience using Autodesk Inventor in a manufacturing, test-system, industrial, aerospace, defense or product-development environment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret Clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
Required skills
- Autodesk Inventor (parametric 3D modeling, assemblies)
- AutoCAD
- GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
- PDM/PLM systems such as Autodesk Vault
