Building Inspector – Special Hazards (Augusta, GA)

About the role

The State of Georgia’s Insurance Department is seeking a Building Inspector specialized in hazardous operations to serve Augusta, GA and surrounding areas. Under supervision, you will evaluate facilities and construction sites that handle hazardous materials, high‑risk processes, or specialized systems.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect specialized systems such as gas detection, fire suppression, hazardous exhaust, explosion control, and containment systems.
• Verify compliance with NFPA standards, OSHA regulations, and local ordinances.
• Inspect racetracks for code compliance.
• Investigate incidents, complaints, or violations involving hazardous materials.
• Issue correction notices, citations, or stop‑work orders and ensure follow‑up.
• Collaborate with fire departments, environmental health agencies, and emergency response teams.
• Maintain detailed records using inspection software and databases.
• Stay updated on emerging codes, technologies, and materials.

Required profile

• High school diploma/GED with at least two years of related experience, or one year at the lower level Safety & Complnc Spec 1.
• Valid driver’s license may be required.
• Potential certification or licensure as required by the position.

Required skills

• Knowledge of gas detection systems.
• Experience with fire suppression systems.
• Familiarity with hazardous exhaust, explosion control, and containment systems.
• Proficiency in inspection software and database management.
