Building Inspector – Collin County (Plano, TX)

About the role

The Building Inspector conducts comprehensive inspections of residential and commercial structures in Collin County to verify compliance with building codes, regulations, and approved plans. The role involves field travel, technical guidance to stakeholders, and support for business‑development initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect residential and commercial buildings for structural, plumbing, mechanical and electrical code compliance.
• Interpret municipal, state and national building codes and explain requirements to contractors and the public.
• Prepare detailed inspection reports, issue correction notices and maintain accurate records with photographic evidence.
• Provide technical assistance to homeowners, contractors and permit‑issuing authorities.
• Lead or support inspection‑related projects, ensuring timelines, quality and budget constraints are met.
• Assist inspection management with outreach and permit‑processing activities.

Required profile

• Associate degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Inspection or related field (preferred) or high school diploma/GED with at least 2 years relevant experience.
• Minimum 2 years of journey‑level experience in municipal or county inspection services, construction trades or general contracting.
• ICC certification (or equivalent state‑recognized) and TSBPE Plumbing Inspector license; valid Texas driver’s license.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
• Experience using Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Photoshop.
• Digital camera operation and photo‑editing software for inspection documentation.
