Bomb SME / Ordnance Technician

About the role

Amentum is looking for a Bomb SME / Ordnance Technician in Socorro or Playas, New Mexico, to plan, prepare and carry out experimental explosives and gun tests. The work follows New Mexico Tech / EMRTC safety policies, standard operating procedures and security policies, and takes place under the direct supervision of qualified technicians.

Key responsibilities

• Transport explosives and specialized equipment to test sites.
• Carry out pre-operational briefs, test setup and pre-test system checks.
• Set up test articles according to written plans, clear the area, detonate test articles, clear the test pad and conduct site remediation.
• Consult with management on solutions to misfires and unusual occurrences, and conduct experimental gun tests.
• Build customized rounds to meet pressure and velocity requirements.
• Run full firing sequences: load the gun, install the initiator, connect the firing circuit, retreat to the safe area, fire when instructed, clear the gun and make the test pad safe for data collection.
• Operate wreckers, forklifts and front-end loaders, and use hand tools, power tools and hoisting equipment for shipment handling.
• Maintain magazines, reorganize stores, assist with inventory control and help assemble, repair and maintain gun systems.
• Attend safety meetings and training, keep required certifications and licenses, and present a professional attitude with all personnel and customers.

Required profile

• High school diploma (or GED).
• Valid or current New Mexico Commercial Driver's License with HazMat endorsement (Class C or desired Class A).
• Graduate of Naval School, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) or Hazardous Devices School, with at least eight years of recent EOD / bomb tech and explosive R&D experience combined.
• Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms background check clearance (subject to the Lautenberg Amendment).

Required skills

• Data entry into Microsoft and Windows software applications.
• Ability to pass a thorough background check.
