Assistant Director, Instructional Technology

About the role

The Department of Engineering Information Technology at the A. James Clark School of Engineering seeks an Assistant Director to lead the school’s instructional technology and audiovisual services. This senior position provides operational, technical and administrative leadership for classrooms, studios, labs and distance‑education environments.

Key responsibilities

• Manage daily operations of instructional technology, supervise four full‑time staff and coordinate resources across classrooms, studios, labs and event spaces.
• Plan, design, procure, install, test, operate and maintain audiovisual and instructional‑technology systems, including Crestron, Extron and QSC control platforms.
• Conduct site assessments, develop technical requirements, oversee vendor and contractor work, and inspect completed installations.
• Develop service standards, budgeting, purchasing, technology roadmaps and equipment‑replacement plans.
• Support distance‑learning, lecture capture, video production, streaming and event technologies, providing hands‑on assistance when needed.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in a related field.
• Minimum seven years of experience managing classroom or instructional‑technology services in higher education.
• At least two years of supervisory or managerial experience.
• Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff, vendors and university partners to resolve service issues.

Required skills

• Crestron, Extron and QSC‑class control and digital‑signal‑processing systems.
• AV‑over‑IP, streaming encoders, lecture‑capture and web‑conferencing platforms.
• LMS integrations and familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
• Interpretation of audiovisual blueprints, technical schematics and facility‑construction documents.
• Camera operation, video recording and basic production equipment handling.
