Applied AI Engineer (R37) - Agentic AI for Healthcare
r1rcm
Job description
About the role
R1 RCM is a revenue cycle company that combines revenue cycle expertise with analytics, AI, intelligent automation and workflow orchestration to help hospitals, health systems and medical groups improve financial performance. R37 is its AI innovation lab, building technology such as Phare OS, which improves pre-bill workflows (authorization, utilization management, documentation and coding) and prevents claim denials. As an Applied AI Scientist, you will turn complex healthcare workflows into reliable, production-ready AI solutions, designing and optimizing AI agents for healthcare use cases and collaborating with clinical, product and engineering teams.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build and iterate agentic AI systems for workflows such as documentation, coding, denial management, appeals and revenue cycle automation.
- Develop long-horizon agent behavior across context construction, retrieval, tool use, memory, routing, verification, escalation and human-in-the-loop review.
- Define what good looks like for clinical agents, turning expert workflows into specifications, rubrics, gold standards, test cases and success criteria.
- Build evaluation and feedback loops using expert review, production logs, model outputs and benchmarks to measure performance, regressions, edge cases, safety, reliability and business impact.
- Prototype AI capabilities from 0 to 1 and harden them into explainable, auditable production systems with monitoring and performance gates.
- Partner with research and ML engineering teams on model selection, fine-tuning, reward modeling, distillation, synthetic data, post-training and internal AI infrastructure.
Required profile
- 4+ years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, applied AI, research engineering or a related field.
- Ability to work in ambiguous, high-impact environments and turn complex problems into scalable AI solutions.
- Level 2 to Staff: L2 owns end-to-end projects ($140k-$200k); L3 leads larger projects ($140k-$253k); Senior manages a portfolio of projects ($140k-$294k); Staff leads multiple teams or initiatives ($140k-$350k).
Required skills
- Strong Python and production applications using APIs, structured data, testing, logging and observability tools.
- LLM applications, AI agents, RAG, prompt engineering, tool calling, structured outputs or ML systems.
- Evaluation frameworks, benchmarks, experimentation workflows and performance monitoring for AI systems.
What we offer
- Base pay of $140,000-$270,000 depending on level, with a bonus starting at 10%.
- Flexible PTO and comprehensive health benefits.
- 401(k) matching.
