AmeriCorps Legal Assistant – Fair Housing (Hybrid/Onsite)

About the role

The Access to Justice Project, a partnership between LawNY and AmeriCorps, is seeking a Legal Assistant to support its Fair Housing Unit in Rochester. This 12‑month service term provides direct exposure to civil law matters affecting low‑income clients and offers a blend of office‑based and hybrid work options.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct intake interviews and screen eligibility for income‑qualified clients seeking legal assistance.
• Assist with case preparation, document drafting, and filing for fair housing and related civil matters.
• Engage in community outreach to connect underserved populations with legal resources.
• Collaborate with volunteer lawyers, human‑services agencies, and other partners to coordinate services.
• Maintain accurate client records and track service hours in compliance with AmeriCorps reporting requirements.

Required profile

• At least two years of college coursework or equivalent experience.
• Strong interest in civil law, housing rights, or public interest legal work.
• Ability to commute to the Rochester office.
• Excellent communication skills and a commitment to serving low‑income communities.
