9-1-1 Telecommunications Dispatcher

About the role

The 9-1-1 Telecommunications Dispatcher answers emergency calls, gathers critical information and dispatches the appropriate first‑responders. The role also serves as the initial point of contact for visitors and callers to the police department, handling a variety of administrative tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Answer 911 emergency lines, obtain details, and relay information to police, fire, EMS, or other responders.
• Maintain written radio logs and enter data into TLETS/NLETS (missing persons, warrants, stolen property, protective orders).
• Monitor police, fire, EMS and city utility channels and respond as needed.
• Provide receptionist duties for City Hall phones and walk‑in visitors.
• Prepare reports, collect fines/fees, and type statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; possession of a Texas Telecommunicators license (or ability to obtain within one year).
• Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays and respond to emergencies with minimal notice.
• Pass TCIC/NCIC security background investigation and drug screening.
• Ability to perform under stress, lift up to 35 lb, and remain seated for long periods.

Required skills

• Operation of TLETS/NLETS systems.
• Access and use of TCIC/NCIC databases.
• Two‑way radio communication proficiency.
• Use of Telephone Device for the Deaf (TDD).
• Standard office equipment (computer, printer, fax, copier).
