Sports Specialist (Fitness Instructor)

About the role

The Sports Specialist provides fitness instruction, personal training, and group exercise services to active‑duty military personnel at the Fitness, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department of Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in New Orleans. The role supports the Navy's Physical Readiness Program and contributes to overall force health and morale.

Key responsibilities

• Design, supervise, coach, and instruct a variety of group exercise programs (e.g., step, spin, water aerobics) both inside and outside the fitness facility.
• Conduct fitness testing, measuring aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, flexibility, endurance, and blood pressure.
• Provide certified personal training and group exercise services to eligible patrons, ensuring safe and effective techniques.
• Develop and implement physical fitness programs in collaboration with command representatives.
• Maintain clean, safe fitness spaces and perform basic equipment maintenance and repairs.
• Prepare written instructions, procedures, and functional area reports.
• Assist with marketing, promotion, and outreach for fitness programs, including the Command Fitness Leader course.

Required profile

• Must meet Federal employment suitability requirements.
• Ability to work effectively with military personnel and command representatives.

Required skills

• Certified Personal Trainer credential.
• Group Exercise Instruction certification.
• Experience conducting comprehensive fitness testing.
• Basic equipment maintenance and repair skills.
