Senior Associate – State & Local Tax (Remote Option)

About the role

KPMG is seeking a Senior Associate to join its State and Local Tax (SALT) practice, focusing on alternative‑investment asset management. The role offers the chance to work with high‑profile hedge funds, private‑equity and real‑estate firms while developing expertise in multi‑state tax compliance, planning and controversy matters.

Key responsibilities

• Assist multi‑state alternative‑investment firms (hedge funds, fund‑to‑funds, private equity, real estate) with compliance, advisory, planning and controversy issues.
• Support multi‑state companies in tax controversies, including audit preparation, representation at hearings and appeals, and drafting protest letters.
• Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to provide industry‑specific tax knowledge.
• Review and manage information for state income tax returns throughout the preparation cycle.
• Build and maintain client relationships while supervising, mentoring and developing junior staff.
• Research and draft technical memoranda on income, franchise, and sales‑use tax questions.

Required profile

• Minimum two years of experience performing tax research and preparing state income tax returns for pass‑through and corporate entities.
• Bachelor’s degree, J.D., LL.M. in Taxation, or Master’s in Taxation from an accredited institution.
• Experience serving pass‑through entities and solid knowledge of relevant state tax concepts.
• Strong relationship‑building skills with both internal teams and clients.
• Ability to thrive in a high‑energy team environment.
• Excellent written communication, compliance and tax research abilities.
