Principal Embedded Software Engineer (Level 1)

About the role

Alcon is seeking a Principal Embedded Software Engineer to lead the design and development of software for computer‑controlled electromechanical medical devices. The role involves working in a Real‑Time Operating System environment, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance for products used by millions of patients worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and implementation of complex embedded software solutions.
• Provide technical guidance and mentor junior engineers.
• Collaborate with product management and business leaders to align software with business needs.
• Ensure best practices, optimize development processes, and improve the software development lifecycle.
• Drive high‑impact engineering projects and make key technical decisions on architecture and strategy.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) and at least 5 years of relevant embedded software experience.
• Fluent English communication skills.
• Experience with board bring‑up, peripheral interfacing, and compliance with GxP regulations.

Required skills

• Proficiency in C and C++ for embedded microcontrollers (e.g., STM32, NXP).
• Strong knowledge of RTOS (CMX, ThreadX) and multi‑threaded application development.
• Hands‑on experience with communication protocols such as SPI, CAN, UART, I2C, Ethernet.
• Debugging using tools like CANoe, Lauterbach and lab equipment (logic analyzer, oscilloscope).
• Ability to read schematics, develop bootloaders, device drivers, and write design‑test documentation.
