Peer Mentor – Newcomer Youth Summer Academy

About the role

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking current Leaders in Training (LIT) students to serve as Peer Mentors for the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy, a six‑week in‑person program that supports newly arrived immigrant youth in New York City schools.

Key responsibilities

• Complete all required staff training before the program begins and attend ongoing development sessions.
• Support a single classroom of 5‑21‑year‑old students, assisting teachers with classroom management and small‑group tutoring.
• Model positive academic and social behavior, fostering a culturally responsive and trauma‑informed environment.
• Help supervise daily meals, arrival and dismissal, and accompany students on Friday field trips.
• Assist students in navigating cultural differences and promote inclusion throughout the school day.
• Provide feedback through staff surveys and adhere to all IRC policies.

Required profile

• Minimum age 17 and a rising high school senior.
• Active participant in good standing with the IRC Leaders in Training program.
• Available for the full six‑week duration, including all training days and field trips.
• Strong commitment to supporting immigrant youth and creating a safe learning environment.
