Lead Software Engineer - Backend (Java, AWS, Kafka)

About the role

JPMorgan Chase is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to drive the design and delivery of secure, scalable backend services for Consumer and Community Banking. You will lead an agile team, shape architecture, and ensure production quality for high‑throughput, event‑driven systems.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement distributed, event‑driven backend services using Java, Kafka, and AWS.
• Set architectural standards for scalability, reliability, and observability.
• Collaborate with product, architecture, and platform teams to translate requirements into resilient roadmaps.
• Champion CI/CD practices, automated testing, and operational readiness (SLIs/SLOs, on‑call rotation).
• Own production operations, including monitoring, incident response, root‑cause analysis, and continuous improvement.
• Drive data modeling and API design for low‑latency, high‑throughput systems.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, pair programming, and technical guidance.

Required profile

• Formal training or certification in software engineering and at least 5 years of hands‑on experience.
• Proven experience leading projects or teams and delivering complex production systems.
• Strong background in Agile/Scrum environments.

Required skills

• Java (Java 17+) with deep knowledge of concurrency, collections, and performance tuning.
• Apache Kafka (partitions, consumer groups, exactly‑once semantics, schema management).
• AWS services (ECS/EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, S3, KMS, IAM, CloudWatch) and infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform or CloudFormation).
• Event‑driven and microservices architecture, REST APIs, asynchronous messaging.
• CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, blue/green and canary deployment strategies.
• Reliability and observability fundamentals (retries, idempotency, timeouts, logging, metrics, tracing).
• Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Micrometer, reactive programming (Project Reactor).
• Modern security practices (OAuth2/OIDC, mTLS, secrets management, least‑privilege IAM).
