About the role

The Electronics Technician III supports the Facilities Performance Group by maintaining, repairing, and calibrating utility meters, HVAC, lighting, electrical, and building‑automation systems across the University of Maryland campus. The role involves ensuring operational readiness of new and existing electro‑mechanical equipment and using mobile devices to program and test metering devices that track campus energy usage.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair utility meters, HVAC, lighting, electrical, and building‑automation devices.
  • Perform checkout and operational readiness reviews for new and existing systems.
  • Program, operate, test, and calibrate electrical and HVAC metering equipment.
  • Install rigid or EMT conduit and integrate meters with campus Ethernet LAN using Modbus RTU or BACnet MSTP.
  • Lift and carry materials up to 50 lb, climb ladders/scaffolding up to 20 ft, and work in hazardous or confined spaces.

Required profile

  • Bachelor’s, associate degree, or vocational/technical education related to electronics, HVAC, or building automation.
  • Certification or license in HVAC, electrical, or building‑automation systems is highly desired.
  • Experience installing equipment and meters on a large campus.
  • Ability to work safely with utilities (electrical, steam, natural gas, water) and at voltages >50 V.

Required skills

  • Utility metering, HVAC, and building‑automation systems.
  • Modbus RTU and BACnet MSTP communication protocols.
  • Installation of rigid or EMT conduit.
  • Use of hand tools, electrical testing equipment, and calibration instruments.
  • Knowledge of HVAC pneumatic controls and safe work practices for utilities.
