Controller – Nonprofit (Hybrid, Chicago)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the finance function of a mission‑driven nonprofit operating in a complex, government‑funded environment. The role will oversee full‑cycle accounting, ensure grant compliance, and prepare the organization for audits while partnering closely with executive leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the general ledger, month‑end close, and preparation of financial statements.
• Oversee government billing, cost allocation, and compliance with Uniform Guidance for grants.
• Manage the annual audit and Single Audit processes, serving as primary contact for auditors.
• Supervise and develop a mid‑sized accounting, billing, and accounts‑payable team.
• Collaborate with program and grants teams on budgeting, contract performance, and financial reporting.
• Support board‑level and executive financial reporting requirements.

Required profile

• Proven experience in full‑cycle accounting within a multi‑program, government‑funded organization.
• Demonstrated ability to manage audit processes and grant compliance.
• Strong leadership skills to supervise and develop accounting staff.
• Excellent communication skills for interaction with executive leadership and board members.
