About the role
The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. (MSG) is seeking a Construction Inspector to support its growing portfolio of roadway, bridge, municipal and utility projects across Michigan. The role involves on‑site inspection, documentation, and coordination with contractors, clients and internal teams to ensure projects meet MDOT and local standards.
Key responsibilities
- Perform daily field inspections of construction activities for compliance with plans, specifications and industry standards.
- Monitor contractor safety practices, work quality, and material placement.
- Document project activities using MDOT‑compliant tools such as FieldManager/FieldBook, AASHTOWare or similar systems.
- Conduct measurements, verify quantities and materials, and assist with pay item documentation.
- Observe and record testing of concrete, soils, asphalt and other materials performed by certified technicians.
- Communicate progress, issues and changes to contractors, clients and MSG staff.
- Prepare field sketches, as‑built records, punch lists and support change documentation.
- Assist project engineers and managers with field data, photos, reports and progress updates.
- Ensure compliance with MDOT, local agency and project‑specific requirements and attend progress meetings as needed.
Required profile
- 3–10 years of construction inspection experience, preferably on roadway, bridge, municipal or utility projects.
- Familiarity with MDOT specifications, procedures and documentation standards.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to multiple sites throughout Michigan.
- Ability to work outdoors in active construction environments.

- MDEQ Part 91 Soil Erosion & Sedimentation Control – Construction Stormwater Inspector
- OSHA 10‑Hour or 30‑Hour Construction Safety
- Certified Stormwater Operator (CSWO)
- Michigan Certified Hot Mix Asphalt QA/QC Technician
- Work Zone Safety – ATSSA Traffic Control Technician
