Classroom Culture Lead Teacher – Middle/High School

About the role

The International Rescue Committee is seeking a Classroom Culture Lead Teacher (CCLT) for its Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA). This six‑week summer program supports newly arrived refugee youth, ages 5‑21, to succeed in New York City public schools. The CCLT will act as both a homeroom teacher and a guidance counselor for middle and high school students, fostering a supportive classroom environment.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and lead daily mindfulness and SEL mini‑lessons at the start and end of each day.
• Teach academic content aligned with NYSA themes, standards, and curricula.
• Monitor student behavior, well‑being, and academic progress in line with Academy philosophy.
• Supervise lunch periods and ensure a safe, inclusive environment.
• Lead Friday field trips and coordinate logistics for the class.
• Communicate regularly with Academic Lead Teachers, Peer Mentors, administration, and families.
• Participate in mandatory program sessions, collaborative planning, staff training, and program meetings.

Required profile

• Passion for working with refugee and newcomer youth.
• Experience supporting middle and high school students in an educational setting.
• Strong interpersonal skills to build trust and manage classroom culture.
• Ability to observe, assess, and record academic and social‑emotional progress.
