About the role
The International Rescue Committee is seeking an enthusiastic Classroom Culture Lead Teacher for its Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA). This six‑week program supports newly arrived refugee youth in New York City schools, helping them succeed academically and socially.
Key responsibilities
- Lead classroom culture, rituals, and routines for a single grade level (K‑1, 2‑3, or 4‑5) throughout the program.
- Plan and deliver daily academic lessons and mini‑lessons aligned with NYSA themes, standards, and curricula.
- Facilitate whole‑group SEL, relationship‑building, and community‑building activities.
- Provide one‑on‑one or small‑group support for student well‑being and learning.
- Manage behavior in line with Academy philosophy and classroom guidelines.
- Lead Friday field trips for the assigned class.
- Monitor and record individual student progress in academic and social‑emotional domains.
- Guide Peer Mentors and ensure timely communication with Academic Lead Teachers, administration, and families.
- Participate in mandatory program sessions, instructional planning, trainings, and all team meetings.
Required profile
- Passionate, solutions‑driven change‑maker with a commitment to supporting refugee youth.
- Experience working with elementary‑age students in diverse, multicultural settings.
- Strong ability to build relationships, manage classroom behavior, and foster social‑emotional growth.
