Associate/Full Professor of Geosciences (Endowed Field Chair)

About the role

The Department of Geosciences at the University of Arkansas seeks an Endowed Associate Professor or Professor to fill the inaugural Dr. T.A. “Mac” McGilvery, Karen R. McGilvery and Maurice F. Storm Field Experience Endowed Chair. The role combines teaching, research, and leadership of immersive field experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.

Key responsibilities

• Teach and mentor students, accounting for 40% of effort, including multi‑week intensive field courses.
• Conduct field‑based research and scholarly activities, representing another 40% of effort.
• Coordinate and co‑organize two three‑week summer field camps and spring‑break field trips, ensuring safety, accessibility, and high educational impact.
• Provide academic service (≈20% effort) such as committee work and interdisciplinary collaboration with internal and external partners.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Geosciences or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated record of field‑based teaching and research, including experience leading intensive field courses.
• Potential to develop and sustain field‑oriented research and teaching programs.
• Willingness to drive 12‑passenger vans/trucks for field activities and to provide remote support for seasonal courses.
