Senior Product Engineer, Scalability

About the role

Railway is looking for a senior backend‑leaning engineer to own the design and scaling of high‑throughput systems that power usage metering, billing, payments, fraud detection and background workers for millions of developers.

Key responsibilities

• Architect and scale real‑time billing pipelines from ClickHouse ingestion to rating and invoicing.
• Build idempotent payment flows with Stripe and other providers, handling retries and reconciliation.
• Develop fraud‑detection services that collect signals, score events in real time and automatically mitigate abuse.
• Scale core infrastructure such as Postgres under heavy write load, Node.js services, and Temporal‑orchestrated workflows.
• Write TypeScript + GraphQL APIs with strong auditability and contribute to open‑source tools (CLI, SDK, Railpack).

Required profile

• Proven ability to autonomously design and implement backend systems where correctness and auditability are paramount.
• Track record of scaling pipelines or services by at least 10× and choosing appropriate tools.
• Deep expertise in Postgres data modeling and consistency guarantees at scale.
• Strong knowledge of Node.js internals and experience with long‑running asynchronous jobs, preferably using Temporal.
• Understanding of money movement, payment provider APIs, idempotency, retries and failure modes.
