Ophthalmic Technician 1 – Full‑Time

About the role

The University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is seeking a full‑time Ophthalmic Technician 1 to support clinical care and research. The OT1 performs a wide range of eye‑care tests, documents findings in the EMR, and assists providers with patient preparation and documentation.

Key responsibilities

• Perform and record clinical tests such as visual fields, intra‑ocular pressure (Goldmann, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care), pachymetry, lensometry, refraction, and ocular surface assessment.
• Document patient history, chief complaint, medications, allergies, and exam results in the electronic medical record.
• Prepare patients for intravitreal injections and assist with IVI setup.
• Support providers by acting as an ophthalmic scribe and ensuring equipment calibration.
• Travel to satellite eye centers, work evenings/weekends as needed, and participate in clinical research.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of relevant ophthalmic experience.
• BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
• Professional appearance, strong communication skills, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Attention to detail, ability to meet productivity goals, and commitment to patient safety and confidentiality.

Required skills

• Proficiency with EMR and telehealth platforms for patient documentation.
• Knowledge of ocular anatomy, motility, and standard ophthalmic testing equipment.
• Competence in using devices such as Goldman tonometer, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care, pachymeter, and visual‑field analyzers.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
