Medication Aide Student Trainee – Michael Unit

About the role

This position provides basic administrative and clinical assistance within the nursing department of a correctional healthcare facility. It is designed to transition a student into a certified correctional medication aide through structured education and on‑the‑job training.

Key responsibilities

• Attend 140 hours of online medication aide college courses.
• Complete clinical activities and rotations, typically 4 hours of online training and 4 hours of on‑the‑job training each day.
• Enter and assimilate data, generate reports, and draft routine correspondence using a personal computer.
• Perform administrative support tasks such as filing, mail handling, faxing, and typing.
• Answer phone calls and route them appropriately.
• Assist with patient activities and care as directed by the nurse manager.
• Maintain patient care areas with necessary supplies and uphold privacy and confidentiality.

Required profile

• Vocational or special training in a healthcare setting.
• Strong analytical and interpersonal abilities.
• Ability to work in a clean, safe medical environment within a prison or juvenile detention center.
• Physical capacity to walk, stand, lift objects over 50 lb, and handle occasional noise, odors, or cramped spaces.
• Capability to manage stress, work extended or alternate shifts, and interact with potentially combative patients.
