Mechanical Design Engineer - Space Exploration Projects

About the role

Amentum, acting as a teammate company for the Space Exploration Projects with the JETSII contract, is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its team supporting NASA's deep space exploration. The position is posted at multiple levels, and candidates are considered at any level for which the position has been advertised.

Key responsibilities

• Analyze requirements and develop design solutions in a team environment
• Design, develop, test, analyze and implement technical products and systems
• Perform engineering design evaluations and dimensional tolerance analyses, including thermal effects and GD&T
• Produce engineering drawings conforming to applicable standards and perform functional, structural and thermal analyses
• Support design with hand calculations for fit, function, strength and thermal response
• Prepare and present at design reviews and other design documentation and reporting

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, typically with 5-10 years of related experience; license and certification may be required
• BS or MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
• Experience designing parts and assemblies with 3D CAD, producing ASME Y14.5 drawings, and applying tolerance analyses
• Experience with machine shop processes, rapid prototyping (3D printing), and structural and thermal analysis
• Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills
• Ability to complete a U.S. government background investigation; proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency may be required

Preferred profile

• Prior NASA (especially JSC) or aerospace development and manufacturing experience
• Familiarity with JSC Engineering Drawing System Manual (JPR 8500) and fabrication tolerances (SKZ36103755)
• NASA flight hardware design experience, mechanisms or robotics design, and experience leading design teams and mentoring junior engineers
