About the role
The Emergency Department Technician supports the Registered Nurse by delivering direct patient care and essential clinical services in a fast‑paced ED environment. The role blends patient interaction, specimen handling, and basic diagnostic testing while maintaining a safe and organized department.
Key responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick, bleeding time) following hospital protocols.
- Identify patients, label specimen tubes accurately, and prioritize STAT draws.
- Transport specimens to the laboratory via chute or direct delivery.
- Conduct electrocardiograms (EKG) and assist with point‑of‑care testing.
- Provide direct patient care under the supervision of licensed personnel.
- Maintain current certifications and attend required safety training.
- Handle clerical duties, answer phones, greet patients, and act as a receptionist when needed.
- Clean equipment daily and ensure departmental neatness.
Required profile
- High school diploma or GED (minimum).
- Phlebotomy training and at least one year of phlebotomy experience.
- Formal training or equivalent experience such as CNA, EMT, or nursing assistant preferred.
- Previous experience in a hospital or nursing‑home setting is advantageous.
- Ability to communicate clearly, document accurately, and work collaboratively in a team.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology and computer operations preferred.
- Physical ability to move or lift patients and equipment.
- Compliance with OSHA N95 respirator training and fit testing.
