Technical Laboratory Coordinator – Mechanical Engineering

About the role

The Technical Laboratory Coordinator supports the Mechanical Engineering department at Texas A&M Engineering by supervising the machine shop and rapid prototyping studio. Working primarily evenings and weekends, the coordinator educates students on safe equipment use and assists faculty with part fabrication.

Key responsibilities

• Lead training sessions on manual shop tools, CNC machines and related software for mechanical engineering students.
• Provide technical assistance and instructional support to students, staff and faculty in the machine shop and rapid prototyping studio.
• Fabricate, maintain and repair metal parts, tools and equipment to close tolerances using steel, aluminum or other materials.
• Produce gears, threads, shafts, adapters, jigs and fixtures from drawings, prints or verbal instructions.
• Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and support other lab activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Minimum three years of experience in laboratory or machine‑shop operations.
• Willingness to work primarily evenings and weekends.
• Ability to work effectively with college‑age students, demonstrating patience and empathy.

Required skills

• Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet applications.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and sketches.
• Mathematical computation skills for tolerance calculations.
• Operation of CNC machines and manual shop equipment.
