Remote Tax Paralegal for Boutique California Law Firm

About the role
Latitude Legal is looking for a remote Tax Paralegal to support a boutique California tax law firm that handles complex tax matters for small businesses. The position is engagement‑to‑hire with a strong expectation of permanent conversion for the right candidate.
Key responsibilities
- Manage tax controversy case files end‑to‑end, including setup, deadline and budget tracking, retainer and A/R management, and case closing.
- Support a broad mix of matters such as IRS and state collections, income and employment tax audits, sales tax audits, innocent spouse claims, appeals, and Tax Court proceedings.
- Obtain Powers of Attorney, pull and review agency transcripts and related records.
- Review tax returns, financial statements, general ledgers, and prepare BDA, financial analysis, audit, and sales tax workpapers.
- Draft IRS forms (433‑A, CDP requests, penalty abatement requests, appeals), Tax Court petitions, FOIA and TAS requests using firm tax tools.
- Conduct legal and factual research using AI‑assisted platforms and traditional tools; draft memos for internal and client use.
- Communicate directly with clients and tax agency personnel, coordinate document gathering, provide status updates, and follow up on agency requests.
- Assist with scheduling and attend strategy meetings with clients and responsible attorneys.
Required profile
- 3–7 years of experience in a tax, paralegal, or accounting environment.
- Comfort working with financial data such as tax returns, account transcripts, financial statements, and general ledgers.
- Direct experience interacting with the IRS, FTB, CDTFA, or EDD (strongly preferred).
- Prior experience drafting IRS forms (433‑A, CDP, penalty abatement, appeals) is a strong plus.
- Enrolled Agent (EA) license preferred but not required.
- Highly organized, process‑oriented, and reliant on systems, checklists, and workflows.
- Proven ability to work independently and manage a caseload in a fully remote environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable engaging directly with clients and tax agency personnel.
