Puerto Rican Communities Reporter II

About the role

Connecticut Public, the state’s NPR/PBS service, is hiring a bilingual, multiplatform journalist to serve as the Puerto Rican Communities Reporter II. Based in Hartford, the reporter will uncover and tell stories that link Connecticut’s large Puerto Rican population with the island, covering news, culture, food, music and arts.

Key responsibilities

• Develop sources and story ideas for daily broadcast, digital pieces, newsletters and long‑form projects, collaborating with the Latino Initiative “Somos Connecticut”.
• Produce and edit audio for radio, create short‑form video for Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, and contribute to social‑media and community‑engagement events.
• Report on Connecticut’s Latino community, conduct interviews in English and Spanish, and serve as a guest or fill‑in host on talk shows and fundraisers.
• Work jointly with GFR Media in Puerto Rico and with visual journalists to capture field audio, video and photos.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications and 5‑7 years of professional journalism experience.
• Strong knowledge of AP and NPR style, news judgment for radio and digital platforms, and fluency in both English and Spanish.
• Ability to work independently, meet tight deadlines and travel throughout Connecticut and to Puerto Rico.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and the Office 365 suite.
• Experience using Adobe Audition and other digital audio‑editing applications.
• Familiarity with digital editing tools, Smartsheets and Outlook for newsroom coordination.
• Audio editing and production for broadcast.
