Patient Care Technician – Medical/Surgical & Critical Care Float Pool

About the role

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is seeking a Patient Care Technician to join its Medical/Surgical and Critical Care Float Pool. In this position you will provide direct patient care across multiple units, supporting nursing staff and ensuring high‑quality clinical services for a diverse patient population.

Key responsibilities

• Assist nurses with patient hygiene, mobility, and daily living activities.
• Monitor and record vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiratory rate.
• Transport patients safely between departments and prepare them for procedures.
• Collect specimens, perform basic wound care, and support bedside procedures.
• Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health record.
• Respond promptly to patient call lights and emergencies according to protocol.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; completion of a patient care technician or CNA program preferred.
• Current certification (CNA, PCU, or equivalent) and eligibility to work in the United States.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment.
• Flexibility to float between medical/surgical and critical care units as needed.

Required skills

• Basic patient care techniques and vital sign measurement.
• Proficiency with hospital equipment such as ECG monitors and infusion pumps.
• Knowledge of infection control and safety procedures.
