About the role
Outside Machinist II is a skilled, semi‑independent role focused on the repair, installation, and overhaul of shipboard mechanical systems. This technician works with moderate supervision and demonstrates growing proficiency with machining tools, blueprints, and precision measurements.
Key responsibilities
- Set up, align, and operate portable machining tools and standard hand tools.
- Use precision instruments (calipers, verniers, depth/height gauges, tachometers, thermometers, vibration indicators) to take and record accurate measurements.
- Interpret and work from basic to intermediate‑level blueprints, sketches, and specifications.
- Assist with disassembly, repair, installation, testing, and inspection of shipboard machinery such as pumps, valves, propulsion, ventilation equipment, and steering gear.
- Complete required documentation for repairs, measurements, inspections, and equipment tests.
- Maintain strict compliance with NAVSEA safety rules, quality standards, and housekeeping practices.
- Support senior machinists on complex tasks and mentor junior employees as needed.
Required profile
- Minimum of 6 years mechanical/machinist experience; senior‑level proficiency preferred.
- High School Diploma/GED with apprenticeship training, relevant vocational schooling, or equivalent military mechanical experience.
- U.S. citizen (no dual citizenship) and ability to obtain government base access and required security clearances.
- Willingness to travel up to 75% of the year, including short‑notice assignments.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, overhead structures, and physically demanding environments.
Required skills
- Operation of portable machining tools and standard hand tools.
- Use of precision measurement instruments (calipers, verniers, gauges, tachometers, etc.).
- Blueprint interpretation and layout reading.
- Repair, installation, testing, and inspection of shipboard machinery (pumps, valves, propulsion, ventilation, steering gear).
- Compliance with NAVSEA standards and relevant certifications (Hatch Inspector, SUBSAFE, Electroplating, Deep Submergence Systems SOC MCD A/B/C).
