About the role
R+L Carriers’ Information Technology Department in Columbus, Ohio is seeking a Data Center Facilities Engineer to oversee building operations, HVAC, electrical, BMS, emergency generators and fire/life safety systems. The role ensures optimal performance of mission‑critical infrastructure through maintenance, audits and rapid response to emergencies.
Key responsibilities
- Manage maintenance of data‑center components including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, grounds, sub‑station, generators, UPS systems, static switches, fire detection/suppression and security systems.
- Oversee preventive‑maintenance schedules, contractor work, electrical switching and develop Method of Procedure (MOP) documentation.
- Conduct audits and reporting for the data centre, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.
- Maintain technical documentation and operational procedures for the facility.
- Troubleshoot, run diagnostics and perform emergency repairs on critical equipment.
- Prepare analyses, reports, project plans and deliver briefings or presentations on infrastructure.
- Operate routine and emergency services on medium‑voltage switchgear, diesel generators, UPS, PDU, chillers, fire detection/suppression and building monitoring systems.
- Respond to facility emergencies and enforce adherence to MOPs and SOPs.
- Audit power and mechanical capacity, recommend upgrades and coordinate root‑cause analysis with internal teams.
Required profile
- Proven experience in data‑center mission‑critical facilities operations and engineering (UPS, HVAC, generators, cooling, fire/life safety, BMS).
- Ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret complex project documents such as AutoCAD, Visio and PDFs.
- Experience managing projects, developing installation standards and tracking documentation.
- Strong communication skills for interaction with managers, clients, customers and vendors.
- Ability to write SOPs or MOPs for automated building controls.
- High commitment to customer service for co‑workers and clients.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred.
