Editor & Speechwriter for UCLA Samueli School of Engineering

About the role

The UCLA Samueli School of Engineering Office of Marketing Communications seeks an experienced Editor and Speechwriter to craft and refine content for the school’s Newsroom and senior leadership. Reporting to the Assistant Dean and Chief Marketing Communications Officer, you will work across multiple departments to produce clear, compelling communications that highlight cutting‑edge research and initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain an annual editorial calendar, edit draft submissions, and ensure adherence to AP style and editorial guidelines.
• Write, edit, and polish speeches, remarks, and presentations for the Dean and other senior leaders for events and media appearances.
• Produce original news stories, feature articles, media advisories, and digital newsletters, collaborating with writers, graphic designers, and external newsroom staff.
• Manage content publishing in WordPress, selecting appropriate imagery, videos, and captions to enhance stories.
• Coordinate multiple projects, track deadlines, and communicate status updates to the CMO and stakeholders.

Required profile

• Minimum five years of full‑time news copyediting or senior newsroom experience with a digital or daily print publication.
• Strong storytelling ability to translate technical information into clear, fact‑checked, and engaging content.
• Excellent interpersonal skills for collaboration with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external partners.
• Ability to work independently, meet tight deadlines, and respond to urgent inquiries outside regular hours.

Required skills

• Proficiency with WordPress publishing and content management.
• Expertise in AP style or equivalent news writing standards.
