Controller

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead financial management, accounting operations, and administrative support for a construction firm located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The role works closely with executive leadership to ensure accurate reporting, improve operational performance, and enable sound business decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Direct accounting activities across multiple entities, including payables, receivables, payroll, job costing, and cash management.
• Produce monthly financial statements, perform variance analysis, and support leadership planning.
• Lead the month‑end close cycle and deliver timely reports for ownership and management.
• Evaluate spending patterns, track key expense accounts, and implement cost‑control measures.
• Review work‑in‑progress reporting, assess project‑level financial results, and support profitability analysis.
• Oversee banking functions, account reconciliations, petty cash, and internal financial controls.
• Manage tax and compliance obligations, including sales/use tax, payroll reporting, and licensing documentation.
• Guide and develop accounting and front‑office staff while collaborating with project managers, HR, insurance contacts, and external IT vendors.
• Support accurate client invoicing and communicate operational or system issues to leadership.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 3 years of progressive accounting or finance experience with general ledger and financial reporting responsibilities.
• Experience in the construction industry and familiarity with job costing and work‑in‑progress reporting is preferred.
• Demonstrated leadership, organization, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
• High attention to detail, strong problem‑solving ability, and a collaborative approach in a fast‑paced environment.
