Chief of Service, Economic Affairs (Temporary)

About the role

The position is located in the Economic Analysis and Policy Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Reporting to the Division Director, the Chief leads the Global Economic Monitoring Branch, overseeing the production of flagship economic reports and providing policy analysis for senior UN bodies.

Key responsibilities

• Formulate and implement the branch’s work programme, ensuring timely delivery of analyses, publications and briefings.
• Lead the preparation of the World Economic Situation and Prospects, its mid‑year update, and related parliamentary and UNCTAD coordination.
• Supervise staff, manage recruitment, performance evaluation and professional development.
• Prepare high‑quality briefing papers, statements and background notes for senior management, regional commissions and committees.
• Oversee budget preparation, programme reporting and compliance with UN rules and evaluation processes.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in macroeconomics, quantitative economics, econometrics or a related field.
• Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in global economic analysis, preferably in a policy‑oriented, multilateral environment.
• Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience managing teams of economists.
• Strong professionalism, teamwork, planning, leadership and performance‑management competencies as outlined by the UN.
