AI Staff Scientist

About the role

3M is looking for an AI Staff Scientist to join its Corporate R&D organization. You will work on a small, highly technical team developing foundational methods for always‑on learning systems that reason, experiment, and adapt in complex, non‑stationary environments.

Key responsibilities

• Develop computational symbolic representation systems for general use.
• Design, implement, and maintain research code for a language interface to those systems.
• Work from whiteboards, research discussions, and evolving specifications rather than fixed product requirements.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers in statistics, cognitive science, and machine learning to stress‑test experimental learning mechanisms under realistic, adversarial conditions.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Informatics, Cognitive Science, or a related field (completed before start date).
• At least five years of experience in artificial intelligence.
• Experience working in startup environments.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
• Willingness to travel up to 20% domestically.
